Dusting Another Brain

SysAdmin to the Stars

Recently, a fellow blogger requested some assistance from her loyal readers in some various web hosting matters. After living in the web hosting world for a few years, I figured now was a good a time as any to put my hand up and see how much damage I could cause :)

The work itself was quite interesting and provided a perfect excuse to flex my old web hosting muscles to see if my sieve of a brain was still working. Also, assisting someone who was rather interested in the what, how and why of the issue, not only in the solution, was a real treat.

A few days later, a bunch of emails, some redirection rules and assisting in dealing with one of the most unsavoury remote monitoring applications that I have ever bumped into and we have another happy customer.

In this case, the happy customer was the stunningly famous Cindy the Squipper. For those that do not know Cindy, she is one half of the Ken and Squip Show (personal favourite: the show released March 21, 2005) and is responsible for the general malarkey that is Dusting My Brain.

Incidentally, she is also pretty damn good behind a lens. If only she considered selling some prints (I’ll admit that last one was a tad ugly, but I know someone that has a soft spot for those things :) ).

I can highly recommend heading on over to her sites to have listen, a look at her photos and a read of some of her brain dustings when you’ve got an afternoon to spend.

Cindy: it was a good experience working with you, grasshopper. Give me a yell next time you need a sysadmin or some more dust for your brain.

Fred… Fred… Fred…

This video, entitled “Fred greets the day“, has to be the funniest things I’ve seen in ages. Whilst I can’t profess to hearing my alarm clock in the same manner that Fred does, I can completely sympathise with him and how he greets the day (let’s just say mornings and I have an “understanding” – don’t mess with me until the coffee kicks in, and everyone’s happy :) )

This video is very original comedy from the same guy that bring you Teknikal Diffikulties. If you like scripted comedy / skits, it’s well worth a listen.

Fat guy on a bike and a little about the Evil Genius

I was listening to Dave Slusher’s latest Evil Genius Chronicles clambake on the way home from work today where he was talking about working in IT and not exercising enough, leading to the obvious conclusion of gaining a couple of pounds. He has made a resolution is to hit the gym and the pavement to start doing something about it.

Funnily enough, I’m in the same predicament. Being a sysadmin (well, at least for a little while longer :) ) where shift work, on-call and weekend work is the norm, I can honestly say that the past five years with near-zero exercise has not been kind. It’s high time I got off my ass and do something about it. With thanks to one of my best mates, Euge, and his ability to find bargains better than most girls I know, I’m now the proud owner of a nice shiny new bike to get my ass moving again and me back in some semblance of shape.

If you’ve ever seen a fat guy on a bike before (especially one that hasn’t been on two wheels since he learnt to drive ten years ago), you can probably imagine the comedy gold that has been ensuing. I’ve scoped out a route around the back streets of my suburb that’s good for around two or three K’s a lap (memo to self: pick up a bike odometer and measure the route) – a couple of laps of that each night, aside from nearly killing me at the moment, is a damn good start.

Dave: If you ever read this, good on ya! Touch base with me once you reach your target – there’s a really tacky Aussie trinket in it for you to say congratulations and thanks for the last 9 months worth of entertainment I’ve had listening to your podcasts.
