Fred… Fred… Fred…

This video, entitled “Fred greets the day“, has to be the funniest things I’ve seen in ages. Whilst I can’t profess to hearing my alarm clock in the same manner that Fred does, I can completely sympathise with him and how he greets the day (let’s just say mornings and I have an “understanding” – don’t mess with me until the coffee kicks in, and everyone’s happy :) )

This video is very original comedy from the same guy that bring you Teknikal Diffikulties. If you like scripted comedy / skits, it’s well worth a listen.

Sunset

Sunset

Sunset,
originally uploaded by RejectReality.

Given last week was a little quiet around RejectReality, I’m going for a double-post tonight.

V & I were out and about all over the place on Saturday; catching up with some friends for lunch at the Oxford (congratulations K&J!), then way down south for an engagement party for one of V’s cousins in the evening and killed some time in between with a movie – V’s choice (as I wasn’t going to make her sit through Sin City). We saw Monster-in-Law; fortunately, it wasn’t as horrendous as I thought it would be, for a chick flick. :)
With an hour to kill between Marion and the engagement party, we went for a drive next to the beach around Seaford.

Cue one decent sunset and a fully charged digicam, and this is what you get. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, considering it was taken in near pitch-black, no flash, balanced on the steering wheel of my car (with all the windscreeny goodness that entails to screw up your focus when shooting from inside the car), 6 second exposure (with no stabilisation) and probably two or three other elements which really should have meant death for this photo.

A minor histogram-based levels adjustment in photoshop and score one for the good guys!

This week’s stupidity

speedo

speedo,
originally uploaded by RejectReality.

Here’s the end result of week 2 of my stupidity on two wheels (and now with evidence!).

I’m a little in two minds about this – I’m happy that I’ve hit 85 k’s (especially given I’ve been doing this for only two weeks), but slightly disappointed that I didn’t hit 100k’s due to taking a day off.

It seems I’ve just given myself a target to nail this week :)

PS – for those that are desperately worried about the state of my derrière, I believe it’s starting to come out of the coma now. With any luck it will be no longer suffering from shock in the next week or two.

Numbers for the week

It’s been one week of getting off my ass and doing some exercise, and I can honestly say I’m surprised.

After picking up a bike speedo and measuring my course, I’m doing much better than I thought I was. The trip around the neighbourhood is clocking in at just over 3.9 k’s a lap (now extended to 4 just to make round numbers).

The all important numbers:
20 laps in total for the week (2 laps on Monday, 3 laps every other day) = ~80k’s

From nothing, to 80 k’s. In a week.

Holy crap! How the hell did that happen?

PS – that really explains why my ass is killing me :)

Photos of interesting subway architecture

You wouldn’t believe that the majority of these photos were of subway stations and related architecture just by looking at them. Some look more like cathedrals or modern abstract art.

There seems to be some really funky stations out there in the world!

Fat guy on a bike and a little about the Evil Genius

I was listening to Dave Slusher’s latest Evil Genius Chronicles clambake on the way home from work today where he was talking about working in IT and not exercising enough, leading to the obvious conclusion of gaining a couple of pounds. He has made a resolution is to hit the gym and the pavement to start doing something about it.

Funnily enough, I’m in the same predicament. Being a sysadmin (well, at least for a little while longer :) ) where shift work, on-call and weekend work is the norm, I can honestly say that the past five years with near-zero exercise has not been kind. It’s high time I got off my ass and do something about it. With thanks to one of my best mates, Euge, and his ability to find bargains better than most girls I know, I’m now the proud owner of a nice shiny new bike to get my ass moving again and me back in some semblance of shape.

If you’ve ever seen a fat guy on a bike before (especially one that hasn’t been on two wheels since he learnt to drive ten years ago), you can probably imagine the comedy gold that has been ensuing. I’ve scoped out a route around the back streets of my suburb that’s good for around two or three K’s a lap (memo to self: pick up a bike odometer and measure the route) – a couple of laps of that each night, aside from nearly killing me at the moment, is a damn good start.

Dave: If you ever read this, good on ya! Touch base with me once you reach your target – there’s a really tacky Aussie trinket in it for you to say congratulations and thanks for the last 9 months worth of entertainment I’ve had listening to your podcasts.

More on the pool scores

Well, that didn’t last long.

After putting up the first round of scores achieved on my new pool table, pointing out the page to my pool nut friend (who came up with all sorts of colourful names for me once he realised there was bragging rights up for grabs :) ), someone has already requested a format change.

It has been requested that extra statistics be obtained, graphed and provided. Until that’s been coded up (read: whenever I get off my ass because I’m a lazy git), you’ll have to put up with plain text.

Starting next round, the number of wins vs number of wins-by-default (dropping the black in the middle of a game), average number of wins per session per player and margin of victory (number of opponents balls left) will be sourced and displayed.

Feel free to skip this crap – it’s just an ego trip for two clowns playing pool :)

Time for a change…..

I received a phone call this morning with the outcome of the interview.

It looks like I’ve got a career change on my hands!

After close to five years of helpdesk, desktop support, system administration, engineering, and application support, it’s time to play with all sorts of networking stuff.

I’m really looking forward to this opportunity – great company, great position and a friend on the inside that’s already vouched for the work, culture and conditions.

This is going to be interesting, and it can only go up from here.

Viva BathPC!

Many moons ago, a good friend of mine developed BathPC.

This beast was craftily constructed by a mad scientist using the latest in technology – a PC and CRT monitor strapped to a chair with wheels, waterproof keyboards and mice, and 20 or so metres of coax network cabling. The waterproofing was no less than top-notch bubble wrap and duct tape. Real classy stuff :)

The whole contraption was was wheeled into the bathroom, as the name implies, for the purposes of IRC’ing from a nice warm bath. Either that or world domination. We still haven’t worked out which one it was.

The biggest problem with this setup was the frequent fatalities experienced by the input devices due to unexpected consumption of H2O.

It was not a good sight, humble reader. Many a mouse was sacrificed in the name of communicating while bathing, to the point where the number of dead mouse carcasses spread around the house became disturbingly high, bubble wrap and duct tape was everywhere, and the project was scrapped.

So many poor cheap mice might have been saved and I would like to think BathPC would still be alive if only a product such as this was available back in the day.

Viva BathPC!
